found abstracts
‘found abstracts’ is my second solo exhibition, in gallery factory, seoul. as the title of the show implies, i tried to navigate the multiple concepts of ‘abstract’ on my works. they are beyond the literal meaning of ‘abstract’— the visual abstraction, trying to interpret the invisible structure which recognize and reconstitute the objects and happenings in everyday life. such a process suggests a new function of familiar objects by transferring into the unfamiliar and defines autonomous principles occurring accidently by rearranging the objects and happenings into a new spacial and temporal position.
in this exhibition, the ‘abstract’ refers 2 directions. one brings the geometric abstraction as an element of form, which frequently appearing in my work. but these visuals were not produced for actual form of works, rather substance of output from found abstract shapes in daily life. in this process the nature of objects became invalid and brings the new possibilities with diverse medium. the other one refers the process itself, which reconstructs the present and moment in accordance with certain rules. although the start point of this process comes by chance, actual ‘abstract’ never be found by accident rather though reconstruction of the ready-existed — such as abstraction, extraction and epitome. the title of the show, mixed ‘found’ and ‘abstract’, is quite a contradiction; captured the existence together with active process, but this irony would fully explain my works.
